Starbucks For Life 2018

Winning the Starbucks For Life grand prize is not an easy task when you play the Starbucks For Life Game 2018. First, you need to obtain game plays by making qualifying purchases at participating Starbucks locations. Then, obtaining bonus game plays by completing Starbucks For Life challenges will certainly help you get closer to the goal. But ultimately, you will need to get Starbucks For Life Rare Pieces to win.

Each game play will result in either an Instant Win Game prize or a Collect and Win Game Piece. And you will need to collect all 3 game pieces for a chance to win a prize. Two of the three Game Pieces will be common ones while the third one will be a rare one.

Have a look at the chart below to help you figure out which game pieces are the rarest ones in 2017, both in the United States and Canada.

  1. Aside from the collect and win prizes- has anyone IN CANADA won ANY of the other prizes like – FREE COFFEE, FREE PASTRY, HALF OFF SOMETHING (which to me is not really a prize if you have to give Starbucks money- why not just give them to everyone- like Happy Hour promotions?) etc.

I know of none of anyone I talk to having won any of these sub-prizes IN CANADA. In the US, I know of several winners. But, not in Canada, Which to me, at this point midway trough the contest just appears odd.

    • Starbucks Canada clawed back the instant run food prizes that they’ve had in previous SBL promos. None this time. And if you win something like a free bakery item in the U.S. the bar code won’t scan on a Canadian till.

      • I have not won an instant win prize beyond the 10 star & 50 Star prizes. I read back through the rules again, and based on the distribution of these instant win prizes, we in Canada are at a huge disadvantage. There are only 300 instant win coupon prizes. Whereas, in the US there 220,000 are instant win coupon prizes available to be one. (as detailed below)
FOR THE CANADA: Instant Win Game Prizes:
        Instant Win Game Prizes:
FIVE HUNDRED (500) TENTH PRIZES: A coupon good for 50% off any breakfast sandwich OR Sous Vide Egg Bites. Terms and conditions of coupons apply.
FIVE HUNDRED (500) ELEVENTH PRIZES: A free product coupon that can be used for
Brewed Coffee. Terms and conditions of coupons apply. ARV: $2.31.
FIVE HUNDRED (500) TWELFTH PRIZES: A free product coupon that can be used for one (1) bakery Item. Terms and conditions of coupons apply. ARV: $2.33.
FIVE HUNDRED (500) THIRTEEN PRIZES: A coupon good for BOGO on any Grande or larger holiday beverage. Terms and conditions of coupons apply.
FIVE HUNDRED (500) FOURTEENTH PRIZES: A coupon good for 50% off any Grande or larger handcrafted espresso
after 2pm (local time). Terms and conditions of coupons apply.
FIVE HUNDRED (500) FIFTEENTH PRIZES: A coupon good for a bakery item for $1 (plus tax, where applicable), with the purchase of any handcrafted espresso beverage.

FOR THE US: Instant Win Game Prizes:
TWENTY-FIVE THOUSAND (25,000) TENTH PRIZES: A coupon good for 50% off any breakfast sandwich OR Sous Vide Egg Bites. Terms and conditions of coupons apply.
FORTY THOUSAND (40,000) ELEVENTH PRIZES: A free product coupon that can be used for Brewed Coffee. Terms and conditions of coupons apply. ARV: $3.00.
FORTY-FIVE THOUSAND (45,000) TWELFTH PRIZES: A free product coupon that can be used for one (1) bakery item. Terms and conditions of coupons apply. ARV: $2.60.
FORTY-FIVE THOUSAND (45,000) THIRTEEN PRIZES: A coupon good for
BOGO on any Grande or larger handcrafted holiday beverage. Terms and conditions of coupons apply.
FORTY THOUSAND (40,000) FOURTEENTH PRIZES: A coupon good for
50% off any Grande or larger handcrafted espresso on or after 2pm (local time). Terms and conditions of coupons apply.
TWENTY-FIVE THOUSAND (25,000) FIFTEENTH PRIZES: A coupon good for a bakery item for $1 (plus tax, where applicable), with the purchase of any handcrafted espresso beverage.

AGAIN- AND FOR THE RECORD- It is my firm belief that ANY “PRIZE” that requires the purchase of an item, in order to redeem it, IS NOT really a “prize”. i.e. “A coupon good for BOGO on any Grande or larger holiday beverage. Terms and conditions of coupons apply. ” WHY NOT JUST OFFER A FREE “TALL” SIZE- WITH NO PURCHASE REQUIRED ???
And, ANY “PRIZE” that requires you purchase a specific item, and then adding to the injustice, requires AN ADDITIONAL PAYMENT to redeem your prize, i.e. “A coupon good for a bakery item for $1 (plus tax, where applicable), with the purchase of any handcrafted espresso beverage. ” is an insult to our collective intelligence. THESE ARE NOT “PRIZES” They are no different than many other promotional offers Starbucks makes throughout the year, without any requirement to “WIN'” these offers in a contest.
These coupon prizes appear as little more than a way for Starbucks marketing arm to create the illusion of ‘value’, an inflate the number of ‘prizes’ available, (and their collective theoretical value) where little to no real benefit exists.

        • Thanks for your replies, Mark. I agree with all your points, except that I feel that LESS instant win coupon prizes may be a good thing: wouldn’t 220,000 coupon “prizes” dilute one’s chances of winning a good collect and win prize? I would prefer NO food coupons, so that EACH of my plays has a better chance of being a collect-and-win winner.

Just FYI, I haven’t won any product coupons so far, I’ve only won a few 10 bonus star instants. Even thought the rules don’t state it, I wonder if the product coupon instant prizes are actually for the non-member side of the contest? I signed up for that one at work; it only allows one play per day.

          • Instant win coupons in my opinion can be a distraction. I agree that fewer coupons would give you a better shot at the collect and win prizes. However, coupons for truly free items are worth in simple terms 125 stars. And, those bonus stars, 10 star & 50 star prizes can add up to several FREE items over the course of the contest.
As I am a member I did not investigate the ‘non member’ Starbucks rules. If there is a possibility that some ‘prizes’ are being siphoned into into a subset of the main contest, this would likely run afoul of disclosure laws regarding publicity contests. For the most part in general, various US State & Canadian laws require that anything that materially affects your chances of winning must be disclosed.

  2. I just got a PRESENT piece… looks like a wrapped shovel with a bow on it… for the SFL Coffee Collection (US)

Dunno if its common or rare, but since you dont have any pieces listed for it figured i should mention

  3. It appears that the common pieces for the SFL coffee collection are mouse and present/shovel. The present is a shovel, thus the confusion. Someone mentioned a sled, that may be the rare one.

  4. Having reviewed last year’s big winners (for 2017), there are clearly people who won multiple times in both Canada and the US. With the addition of another prize level (A
Starbucks for Life Coffee Collection, which includes which includes Starbucks for Life Tumbler, Starbucks Coffee Press, Starbucks for Life Lapel Pin Set, and 8.8 oz.
Starbucks Reserve Coffee Residents of Quebec will receive a $125 Starbucks digital eGift (terms and conditions apply). ARV: $125.00). , only unlocked after your first receipt of THREE duplicate pieces**, it would be my feeling that those who started playing on the first day ( On 26th 2018: 3. Timing: The Promotion begins on November 26 , 2018 at 8:00 a.m. Pacific Time (“PT”) and ends on December 31, 2018 at 11:59 p.m. PT (the “Promotion Period”). Administrator’s computer is the official time-keeping device for this Promotion) have a greater advantage of receiving those duplicate pieces and unlocking that 9TH PRIZE LEVEL. So, after all is said and done, and the list of winners is published shortly after this year’s latest contest is over; lets see if my prediction comes true. (WINNER’S list for the US visit http://bit.ly/2R7JKwP For CANADA http://bit.ly/2OY2wVI )

**(for Canada) Bonus Game Plays: During the Promotion Period, each Entrant may receive bonus Game Plays, as outlined below:
    a. Duplicate Collect and Win Game Pieces: For every three (3) duplicate Collect and Win
Game Pieces earned (through any combination of duplicate Game Pieces), Entrant will
receive one (1) bonus Game play. In addition, each Entrant will “unlock” the Ninth PrizeType– Starbucks for Life Coffee Collection or a $125 Starbucks digital eGift (for residents of Quebec)(as outlined below) and have the opportunity to play for the chance to win that
Collect and Win Game prize by collecting Game Pieces

  5. It’s nice to see Starbucks for Life back this year, albeit in a shorter version. How many people here were aware that this contest started at 8am PST on November 26th? I had no clue it had already been up and running when I got my Starbucks e-mail telling me to go and play.

Not to complain too much, having had to jump through hoops in the past to claim a larger prize (6 months free food/beverages); prior years have provided FOUR days (INCLUDING WEEKENDS) to get all your paperwork in to claim those larger prizes. This year instead of providing more time to do so, and possibly acknowledging weekends as not counting toward that time; Starbucks’ contest people have now reduced the time frame to THREE DAYS!!!!! When you win a small prize you have FOURTEEN DAYS to claim it (Canada requires a skill testing question be correctly answered before being declared a winner); but if you win anything big (for both Canada and the US), it’s a mad dash to comply with getting your compliance claim forms in. Is this just another way that those at Starbucks are creating artificial barriers to manipulate who is winning?

  6. The common game pieces (Canada, 2018) appear to be same as the US game, which wasn’t always the case in past years.

    Common game pieces to date:
SB for life – Professor Owl, Arctic Fox
    SB for 1 year –
SB for 6 months – Yeti, Polar Bear
SB for 3 months – Winter Bird, GingerBrad Man

    500 BS –
250 BS – Mittens, Canberry Sauce

    • These are the numbers of rare pieces for each game per the official 2018 rules.

    • I have seen multiples of these pieces, so they should be common pieces as well:

      Canada, 2018 SFL
Starbucks for life – Professor Owl, Arctic Fox
      500 Bonus Stars – Snowflake

    • The common game pieces for the SFL Coffee Collection (Canada) appear to be Present & Miss Mouse. It’s a small sample so far so there is a possibility that one of these could be a rare piece rather than a common one.

    • These are the common pieces in Canada for:

Starbucks for a year – Waddles the Penguin, Juniper the Reindeer
500 Bonus Stars – Snowflake, Milk & Cookies
SFL Coffee Cup Collection – Present, Miss Mouse

  7. I have “Christmas Pickle” and “Snowshoes” for 125 bonus stars. Based on others’ comments I think “Snowshoes” might be the rare piece in this category.

(15 winners) 1 year: waddles the penguin, juniper the reindeer
(75 winners) 6 month: (yeti already listed)

  12. So far this year I’ve gotten:
    For life: “Arctic Fox”
    6 months: “Yeti”
    3 months: “Winterbird”
1 month: “Puppermint the Pup” and “Yule Goat”
    500 stars: “Snowflake”
250 stars: “Mittens” and “Canberry Sauce”
    125 stars: “Pickle”

  13. With just about one more day to go for Starbucks for Life, for historic reasons, and to set the record straight, the two “rare pieces” (for CANADA) are: for 75 Bonus Stars – Milk & Cookies & for 50 Bonus Stars – Ice Skates.
As a ‘rare’ piece may come to you at any point, it need not be the last piece completing your winning trio of puzzle pieces, and immediately prior to your pop-up informing you that you have won.
It appears that I was mistaken earlier not having realized that I had received the ‘rare’ piece prior to my winning, and erroneously presumed that the last piece I had just obtained was the ‘rare’ one.
There are still prizes out there, so good luck to everyone, and hope everyone gets to have another shot at Starbucks Summer contest. (if they have one?)

  14. I won the instant win 10 bonus stars a total of 9 times. I tend to play between 3 and 5am when the baby wakes me up. I would have LOVED a mug!

  15. from the rules in the section “Bonus Game Plays” at the very bottom it states:

Limit: Each Entrant may receive up to thirty-five (35) bonus Game plays during the
Promotion Period regardless of method of entry or combination of method of entry.

  16. So if you read through the rules, whether or not you get a rare piece is pre-determined; the animation showing the results of your roll doesn’t have anything to do with it, it’s just to look pretty. Each rare piece has been assigned a random time slot, and whoever happens to roll after that time is going to get it.

Though I do admit it’s frustrating that it almost always pauses for a second on one of my empty slots before moving to the already filled one. Again. And again. I’m betting that’s on purpose to give your heart that little jolt of adrenaline (and hope!) that keeps us coming back for more!

  17. I’ve noticed that sometimes when I get duplicate pieces, it doesn’t register it under the “extra play” tokens (Which essentially cheats me from free plays). This happened twice already. Anyone else had this issue? I won 75 stars already and have only 1 piece left under each category to win anything (Canada)

  18. These are the ones I don’t have—they have to be the rare ones. Have gotten the other two in each category more than once. All I’m doing is spending money and getting nowhere. I’m done!!!! Yes, the dot lands on an empty space and then goes to a space filled already—glitch. Rigged!!!!
Starbucks for life Partridge The Pear
    Starbucks for a Year Snowshoes
Starbucks for 6 Months Holly Berry
Starbucks for 3 Months Silver Bells
Starbucks for a Month ‘Tis The Ski-Son
Starbucks for a Week Grandma’s Mittens
    125 Bonus Stars Fireplace Feels
75 Bonus Stars Milk & Cookies
    50 Bonus Stars Ice Skates

  19. So I’m curious… if you win “Starbucks for Life”, do you have to pay taxes on the whole RV of $56,575.00? I’m not sure I want to win anymore!

  20. Has anyone noticed it dot lands on the blank space then seems to “glitch” and jump to a space that is already filled? It has happed three times now. I am convinced this is rigged now!

    • Yes, this happens every time, it stops at the piece right before the one it is going to land. I just look away until it is over, it is very frustrating even when you know how it works.

    • I noticed the same thing. In the casino business, with respect to slot machines, this would be called a ‘near miss’. And, in some places these ‘near miss’ situations are banned by law. However, as this is a NO PURCHASE required publicity contest, I don’t think anyone ever took the time to address this type of “glitch” in this situation.

        • To be clear Alex, I have never worked for Starbucks, I have no association with the company in the US that is running this contest (I live in Canada, and I am at the same advantage, or disadvantage when playing this contest, as is everyone else. I have no inside information, just instinct & intuition.
That said, I remember many years ago my Father wanting me to go out and get a summer job. I said I could make more money sitting around the house playing contests. And so, many months, and three three inch thick binders later of “congratulations you have won…..” letters later, I made my point. And, that was in the days when hand written cards needed to be sent by snail mail to the contest judging organizations. Those were simpler times. I was a master contest player, and proven winner. (Even sat on a daytime TV talk show panel as an ‘expert’ at winning.)
Today, with a computers pretty much determining who wins many contests, I have different thoughts as to how to win.
The best advice is to think about what you playing for, and thinking about the best way to go about it. Yes, ultimately it is about being lucky. However, computers are not human. And, if you accept that random means just that, random; then play at times when you believe that the fewest are people are playing and improve your chances of using your game plays at or thereafter a ‘winning’ time.

  21. Honestly not trying to be a jerk, but I don’t think it’s cool that the same people are winning all the prizes. That seems like a glitch to me. How can the same people be the 1 out of so many to receive the prizes in more than one category. Seems like sbux should spread that around. I mean, Mark..thats amazing and all…but I think you better start playing the lottery too!

    • I don’t think you are trying to be a jerk J. My Doctor said something similar regarding playing the lottery.
I play STARBUCKS FOR LIFE like anyone else. Though I do take the time to carefully read the rules., and followed Starbucks instructions.
      https://starbucks.promo.eprize.com/holiday17/public/fulfillment/rules_ca.pdf
For all Collect and Win Game Prizes: The first daily credit will be loaded to winners’ accounts on or
around March 1, 2018. Alcoholic beverages and multi-serve items are excluded. Winner must
present a Starbucks Card registered to their Account to redeem the free food or beverage item.
Credits are non-transferable and will expire at 11:59 p.m. PT of each day and will not accumulate
in the winner’s account. Odds of winning the Collect and Win Game Prize depend on the number
of times entrants play and the Game Pieces distributed. Starbucks Card and Starbucks Account
terms and conditions apply. Limit: one (1) Grand Prize, one (1) First Prize, one (1) Second Prize,
one (1) Third Prize, one (1) Fourth Prize, one (1) Fifth Prize, one (1) Sixth Prize, one (1) Seventh
Prize and one (1) Eighth Prize per person.

  22. Since the day this contest started, I have been completing the online form to get my two free game pieces. I am a SB gold card holder of many years now but wanted to take full advantage of getting my two game pieces each day. Everything went great until four days ago — coincidentally the day I have two game pieces on each of the prizes. Suddenly I can no longer receive a game play by filling out the form. I can complete the form, I get the email with the link, I click the link and it says no game plays or I’ve already clicked on this link. The first day I thought no big deal, just a glitch which happens. Four days later, still no game pieces. I contacted SB, got the first email that was basically we’re so sorry but oh well. Emailed them back and said they hadn’t addressed the elephant in the room which was the coincidental glitch when I just needed one game piece. They answered my email asking me to call to speak to a rep, which I did. Same thing, so sorry, it’s a glitch, we can have someone contact you but it will probably take 10 days. Given that the program ends on 1/8 that takes a lot of game pieces off of my board, greatly minimizing my chance to win anything.

    • i’ve had 2 game pieces on all of the categories for a while now, i play every day, and i just keep getting repeats. the same would probably happen to you, so even though i totally see how it’s frustrating, you’re probably not missing out on any wins lol

  23. I have won 75 bonus stars and the instant win prize of 10 bonus stars twice. I really want to win one of the other giveaways besides the stars. It would be so neat!

    • I won a mug (US). They send an email with a bar code to redeem but when I took it into the store, the baristas didn’t even know that mugs were being given away as prizes. We scanned several mugs (under the max value of $12.95 per the official rules) but it didn’t work. I’ve emailed the fulfillment company and we’ll see what happens.

  24. My boyfriend and I both just won the 3 months prize, and I’m pretty sure we have a rare piece for the life prize because we both have 2 pieces and the reindeer is the same for both of us, just different secondary pieces!

    • Congratulations! Lightening can strike twice. My Father also picked up THREE months too, as well as a ONE month prize. Is it possible to post somewhere a screen shot of both you and your boyfriend’s LIFE prize line? I too have the reindeer. as well as WADDLES the PENGUIN. So, presumably that would mean that whatever “OTHER” piece there is in the third position, is the winning “RARE” piece. If you can’t post a photo somewhere, could you please share the name of that “RARE” piece.

      • When I wrote my comments (above) I had not seen that the complete list of puzzle pieces had been posted at the top of this thread. Problem solved. And, congrats to anonymous et al.

      • With respect to anonymous’ assertion of having ‘two different secondary pieces’, of course it’s BS. But some people need to have their fantasies validated so they can think they are being smarter than others. I posted a screenshot of my winnings for a month, and for six months on TWITTER https://twitter.com/SirMLA , and then I recently added my completed line for ONE FREE WEEK, along with Starbucks own announcement. For those that noticed in my earlier posting, I already had the “rare” piece (GRANDMA’S MITTENS) for the ONE WEEK prize, and I just needed a common one to complete that line. It took me all this time, from the first day of the contest, to yesterday, just to get that ‘common’ piece- PEPPERMINT BARK. If anyone doesn’t believe my, or my parents wins, I’d be happy to post screen shots! Of the top TWO prizes, which of course, like everyone else, I need one “rare” piece each, the only other prize I have not won is the one for THREE FREE MONTHS. I am not complaining. I an fortunate enough enough already to have won all the other ones.

  25. I’m pretty sure the Yule goat isn’t the rare piece (in Canada). It was the first I got and I just got another one (also have th cranberries). I’m thinking ice skates are the rare piece.

    • You may well be correct. The order in which you get the pieces does not always mean that the “RARE” one will be the last one to complete the row. I remember getting the “RARE” piece for ONE month on the first day, and it took me until the final last two days of the contest to pick up what was known to be a ‘common’ piece.

  26. I think it’s probably the Ice Skates (rather than the Yule Goat) that is rare for the 50 bonus stars. Have gotten the goat 3 times now, and still no Ice Skates. U.S. player here.

  27. **My results are only based on 2 players. I won 75 bonus stars. My husband has 2 pieces for 75 bonus stars not including milk & cookies. That’s why I assume it’s rare, but maybe he’s lucky enough to have a rare piece as well. : ) Every Other piece we have in common Other than “Candy Cane” for one year. He has that piece and I don’t. I hope that helps!!!! Good luck everyone!

  28. It looks like:

Waddles and Oliver the Reindeer are the common pieces for life

Coffee Bear and Candy Cane are common for one year

Brad and Wild Cuddlefox are common for 6 months

Winter Sparrow and Cozi Yeti are common for 3 months

        • I am so sorry, I forgot to specify that I am in CANADA.
It appears Starbucks treats these STARBUCKS FOR LIFE contests as linked, but treated as independent events when it comes to prize allocation. We don’t get “FREE” food, beverage, or tumbler prizes here, just an opportunity at BONUS stars along with the various game pieces.
Just as a note- In Canada, somewhere buried in the often arcane laws that govern this type of publicity contest, there is a statement that any knowledge in the purvey of the sponsoring agent must be disclosed. As you don’t have much control over a randomly assigned puzzle piece, Starbucks has chosen not to disclose what the “RARE” pieces are. However, with respect to many other similar contests run in Canada, the “RARE” pieces are simply specified in the rules. Life is so much easier knowing, even though your odds of winning remain the same.

  31. The following are what I would describe as the RARE pieces. These are the ‘official’ names Starbucks has attributed to them:
    For 6 MONTHS- “HOLLY BERRY”
    For 3 MONTHS- “SILVER BELLS
For ONE MONTH- ” ‘TIS THE SKI-SON”
    For ONE WEEK- “GRANDMA’S MITTENS”
    125 STARS- “FIREPLACE FEELS”
I have pictures posted on my twitter account: https://twitter.com/SirMLA
    Hope this helps.
    Mark.

      • Thank you.
I received an e-mail earlier today that my signed “Declaration of Compliance” forms had arrived, and been accepted by HelloWorld. It cost me C$51.44 to FedEx (Toronto, CANADA to Springfield, MICHIGAN) my declaration by overnight delivery in order to not risk not meeting the FOUR DAY requirement for delivery of those legal documents, as per the rules.
Anyone else find it odd, IN CANADA, that if you win so little as FIVE BONUS STARS, you have FOURTEEN days to claim your prize. But, if you win any of the TOP THREE prizes, you have to meet a very strict time deadline of FOUR days for delivery of your signed “Declaration of Compliance” forms from Canada to the United States !!! As per the contest rules, if your “Declaration of Compliance” forms don’t make it to HelloWorld in FOUR DAYS, your prize is forfeited, and awarded by a drawing from NON-winning eligible game plays.
